What is a Widget?

Widgets are fun, useful mini-applications that help you do everyday tasks. Dashboard comes with many widgets already installed. If you are connected to the Internet, you can download additional widgets (like our Time Machine Launcher widget). You can have more informations about Dashboard on the Apple website.

How to install the Time Machine Launcher?

First you have to open the archive (.zip file) by double-clicking on it. Then, open the widget file and the Widget Installer will ask you if you want to install the Time Machine Launcher widget.
Click on “Install” to install it. Once you click Install, the Time Machine Launcher widget appears in Dashboard in temporary “test drive” mode, allowing you to play around with it before deciding whether you want to keep it or not. While in “test drive” mode, you can try out all the widget’s features. If you decide to keep it, click the Keep button. If you want to delete it, you guessed it, click Delete.

You’re done, the widget will appear on your dashboard and you can start to use it.

How to disable or delete the Time Machine Launcher?

If you want to remove or disable the Time Machine Widget you will have to use the Widget Manager! To access Widget Manager, simply do this:

  1. In Dashboard, open the Widget Bar by clicking the plus sign (+) button.
  2. Click the Manage Widgets button on the left side of the screen, or click the Widgets widget in the Widget Bar
  3. Widget Manager appears and displays a list of all your installed widgets.
  4. Deselect the checkbox next to the Time Machine Launcher widget if you just want the widget to disappear from Dashboard. You can sort widgets in the Widget Manager by name or by added date (this doesn’t change their order in the Widget Bar). Note: Deselecting a widget in Widget Manager disables it so that it doesn’t appear in Dashboard, but it doesn’t completely delete the widget from your computer.
  5. To remove the Time Machine Launcher widget, click the red remove button (it looks like a red circle with a horizontal white line through it) to the right of the widget. When you do, this alert appears: “(Time Machine Launcher widget) Move this widget to the Trash?”
  6. Click OK to remove the widget from Dashboard and put it in the Trash.

I don’t see the status of Time Machine changing when I change it with the widget

If you’re looking at the System Preferences application in the background while changing the status of Time Machine with the widget, it’ll not reflect the change in the System Preferences window. You have to quit and relaunch the System Preferences to see the change, but don’t worry, the widget works and the status of your Time Machine is well changed!
